Can You Have Laser Hair Removal on Skin with Freckles or Moles?

This article is for you if you are anxious to begin laser hair removal treatments but are unsure if it is safe to use on skin that has freckles and/or moles.

You have every right to be concerned about this, and we want every one of our clients to feel entirely at ease during their treatment.

There may be a method to get you the treatment you want without harming your moles if you’ve been putting off getting laser hair removal because you have freckles or moles on your skin.

At the Brow Designer in Waterlooville, we have the knowledge and skill to take care of your skin and ensure that treatments are safe for skin that is prone to moles.

So let’s address some of the often asked issues about moles and laser hair removal.

Can laser hair removal affect moles?

The short answer is that yes, moles can be harmed if laser hair removal is performed over a skin area that has them.

By drawing attention to the pigment in the hair follicle, laser hair removal works. The laser energy is absorbed by this pigment, which destroys the hair follicle and stops the hair from growing again.

More pigmented cells than in the surrounding skin can be found in moles. This implies that the pigment in the mole would likewise be absorbed by the laser, disturbing it and maybe causing it to lift. This could subsequently result in scabbing, discomfort for up to two weeks, and irritation and inflammation around the mole.

So can you have laser hair removal on an area of skin with moles?

You can, but we’d need to take some security measures to keep the mole(s) safe.

Your technician will cover any visible moles with a long kohl pencil to prevent the laser from being drawn to the pigment. Plasters can also be used to conceal larger moles. This makes it more likely that the laser will only affect the skin around the mole and not the mole itself.

What if I want to remove a hair growing from a mole, can I laser it?

Due to the aforementioned considerations, we advise against doing this. We are aware that people frequently want to get rid of these kinds of hair the most!

Trimming a hair off a mole with a pair of tiny scissors is the best method to do it.

What about freckles – Is it safe to do laser hair removal over those?

It may be acceptable to use laser hair removal on skin with freckles because they are often less dark and elevated than moles.

Before your laser hair removal treatment, please inspect the region and note any freckles that are elevated or noticeably darker than the surrounding ones. For the therapy to start, these freckles must be covered with white kohl pencil, much like a mole would be.
